Valentine's Day and a twist of salt

With thoughts turning to love on February 14 I've been thinking about what to get my other half to celebrate Valentine's Day. I want something that shows how much I love him and appreciate everything he does for me. Trouble is, I've just started a new business and have precious little spare funds.

I remembered when we first got together I took it upon myself to make him a packed lunch to take to work. He came home and said "I realised today that you really love me". I was a bit stumped, I didn't remember doing anything that stood out as a grand display of affection.

Then he explained. I had put a boiled egg in his packed lunch, mainly as a joke as he loves them but had said you can't have one in a lunchbox as the smell is too annoying for your work mates. Ever the practical, I had put some salt in a twist of baking paper. He remembered telling me he couldn't eat a boiled egg without salt. So to him, that little twist of salt showed him how much I loved him.

That has always stayed with me. I too prefer a thoughtful present or gesture to an expensive gift, something that shows the other person knows you and what you like.

So today I am creating a cocktail just for my other half based on the things he likes to drink. He likes white rum, especially in a mojito. He also loves my Blackberry Vinegar, so this twist on the classic mojito is especially for him.

Mint leaves

1 tbsp (15ml) Yaffle House Blackberry Vinegar

  • Top with crushed ice
